Chinese universities: World leaders in first global ranking of universities by subject
· 17 Chinese universities included in QS World University Rankings® by subject
· Eight members of C9 League represented
· Peking University makes top 50 in 21 subjects, and top 20 in four
· Tsinghua makes top 50 in 13 subjects and top 20 in one
The social sciences series of the QS World University Rankings® by subject (revealed on 5th July on TopUniversities.com) concludes the release of the 26 individual academic disciplines ranked. The results see Chinese universities greatly excel their overall positions compared to the overall QS World University Rankings® as Chinese institutions are among the world’s top-ranked universities in economics, sociology, statistics, accounting and law.
While only six Chinese universities make the top 200 in the overall QS World University® Rankings, a total of 17 are represented in the subject-specific rankings, allowing Chinese universities to display their true strength in individual disciplines.
Chinese universities perform particularly impressively in civil engineering, metallurgy, law, and statistics & operational research. Of the 17 universities in the rankings, eight (Fudan University, Nanjing University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Tsinghua University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Xi’an Jiaotong and Zhejiang University) are members of the prestigious C9, indicating that the investment that has been made with a view to making these universities truly competitive on the world stage is paying off.
The QS World University Rankings® by subject are the first to rank universities at individual subject level in the world. With a methodology tailored to fit each subject, the rankings are based on Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation and Citations per Paper.
Ben Sowter, head of research at QS says, “As global mobility and the fee burden on individual students increases, rankings need to become more detailed and focused to meet the demand for comparative information.” He continues, “The prevalence of Chinese universities across the subject rankings indicates that strident policies made in order to improve Chinese higher education are beginning to produce results. ”

QS Rankings use citation data from Scopus which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality Web sources. Scopus is a trusted source of bibliometric data, also used by many other organisations including: the OECD, the Australian Research Council, iFQ (Institut für Forschungsinformation und Qualitätssicherung) and ISTEP (National Institute of Science and Technology Policy of Japan). |
