IDB and Korea’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance to host Korea-LAC Business Forum in Seoul Oct 21-22
Hundreds of business executives and government officials from Latin America and the Caribbean and Korea expected at eventaimed at building strategic partnerships between Korea and Latin America and the Caribbean
Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), H.E. Jae-wan Bahk, the Minister of Strategy and Finance of Korea, and Dr. Yonghwan Kim, Chairman and President of Korea Eximbank, on Oct. 20 will inaugurate the Forum, to be attended by several hundred business executives, leading government officials from Korea, and ministers and vice ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
The Korea-LAC Business Forum is jointly organized by the IDB and by Korea’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance, with the close collaboration of the Export-Import Bank of Korea, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), and the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI). Korea has been a member of the IDB since 2005.
The Business Forum seeks to strengthen and expand commercial ties between the two regions by helping businesses identify opportunities for investment and trade. It is the latest in a series of Asia-LAC Forums that the IDB has organized in recent years. Last year, the China-LAC Business Forum, held in Chengdu, China, attracted more than 1,000 participants from Asia and from all 26 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Korea hosted the Forum in 2007, followed by Japan in 2008.
On the first day of the meeting, attendees will learn about trade and investment opportunities in Korea and Latin America and the Caribbean, two of the most dynamic economic areas in the world.
Trade and investment flows are increasing rapidly: Korean foreign direct investment in LAC grew by 137.8% in 2010 and is greater than that of China in the region. Exports from LAC to Korea grew 25.7% in 2010, while Korean exports to LAC expanded by 35.2%. Yet, bilateral commerce totals just $44 billion, representing only 2.5% of LAC’s total trade, which means there is ample opportunity for growth.
Government officials, academics and private-sector experts from both regions will discuss the potential for the development of sustainable and renewable energy; the importance of investing in IT and transportation infrastructure; options for trade finance and long-term financing through the IDB and through private channels; and the best practices required to establish a favorable business climate for growth.
One of the highlights of the Korea-LAC Business Forum takes place on the second day, when business executives from both regions engage in day-long “matchmaking” sessions. They have an opportunity to interview potential strategic partners for investment, trade and services who have been pre-selected through close collaboration among officials of the IDB and government business-promotion agencies from Korea and LAC.
The Forum is organized by the Integration and Trade Sector and the Office of Outreach and Partnerships of the Inter-American Development Bank.
The Inter-American Development Bank is the largest regional development bank in the world. Established in 1959, it supports efforts by Latin America and the Caribbean countries to reduce poverty and inequality while promoting sustainable, climate-friendly investment and development. In addition to providing loans to member countries, the IDB also provides grants, technical assistance, and research.
